Drumming GP, Mahler: Des Knaben Wunderhorn, OSP Markus Stenze

Esta semana, três concertos em Lisboa. O grupo de percussão Drumming apresenta-se na Gulbenkian com o contrabaixista Edicson Ruiz para um programa de música contemporânea, com estreias de Efrain Oscher, Matthias Ockert e Luis Antunes Pena. A orquestra Gulbenkian toca a Trompa Maravilhosa do Rapaz de Mahler com as vozes de Zandra Macmaster e Christopher Maltman. Marcus Stenze dirige a Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa com obras de Strauss e Haydn no CCB.

This week Ornitologia presents three concerts in Lisbon: Drumming GP at the Gulbenkian Fundation, the Gulbenkian Orchestra with Zandra Macmaster and Christopher Maltman plays Mahler and Marcus Stenze conducts the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra.

Hagen Quartet, Maria João Pires, Will Holshouser Trio + Bernardo Sassetti

O concerto do Quarteto Hagen na Gulbenkian, com Claude Debussy. O regresso de Maria João Pires aos palcos nacionais com a orquestra Sinfónica de Londres dirigida por Eliot Gardiner. O disco Palace Ghosts and Drunken Hymns do trio de Will Holshouser com Bernardo Sasseti.

Hans Zender: Winterreise, Wolfgang Mitterer: Nosferatu, Im Sturm

Sui poemi concentrici, Salvatore Sciarrino

Sui poemi concentrici é o mais recente registo do compositor italiano Salvatore Sciarrino na etiqueta austríaca KAIROS. A obra acompanha a viagem de Dante Alighieri ao Inferno, Purgatório e Paraíso na sua Divina Comédia, escrita no séc. XIV.

Sui poemi concentrici is KAIROS’ latest release and also the most recent recording of a Salvatore Sciarrino’s piece. This concert music is based on a score that Sciarrino wrote for a TV  reading of Dante’s La Divina Comedia.

Interview with Peter Rundel (2/2), Artur Pizarro at IST

Segunda parte da entrevista ao maestro Peter Rundel. A conversa da semana passada é retomada com duas personalidades musicais muito diferentes: o maestro Philippe Herreweghe e Frank Zappa. Prossegue com a próxima temporada do Remix Ensemble, com a experiência de dirigir a Sinfónica Portuguesa e com as estreias e gravações de 2010. Termina com a opinião geral de Peter Rundel sobre o estado da música contemporânea, a diferença entre os públicos de Lisboa e Porto e o que significa trabalhar em Portugal.

Antevisão, com música de Ravel, do recital do pianista Artur Pizarro no Instituto Superior Técnico, dia 19 de Novembro.

Second part of the interview with Peter Rundel. On this show, the maestro talks about Philippe Herreweghe, Frank Zappa, Remix Ensemble’s next season, The Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra and the new recordings and premieres of 2010. He also gives his opinion on the current state of contemporary music, the differences between the audiences of Lisbon and Oporto and his experience of  working in Portugal.

This show also previews the next concert by Artur Pizarro at Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon’s technological school, the coming 19th. To listen, there is music of Maurice Ravel played by this acclaimed Portuguese pianist.

Radu Lupu na Gulbenkian, interview with Peter Rundel (1/2)

Por outro lado, Haydn e Berg acompanham a primeira parte da entrevista a Peter Rundel. Na conversa (em inglês), o maestro fala do programa do concerto com a Sinfónica Portuguesa que dirigiu em Lisboa na passada semana. As diferenças artísticas entre uma grande orquestra clássica e um ensamble contemporâneo, bem como o trabalho com os compositores de hoje são outros dos assuntos da conversa.

This show previews this week’s concerts by Radu Lupu at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon: in solo and with the orchestra. It also features the first part of a two part  interview with Peter Rundel (in english), that begins with the presentation of the pieces of  last week’s concert with the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra. The maestro also discusses the differences between a classical orchestra and a contemporary ensemble as well as his work with today’s composers.

Schubert (Berio’s Rendering, D959, Winterreise)

Com a chegada do tempo frio o Ornitologia dedica um programa a Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828). Em escuta, Rendering para Orquestra que Luciano Berio escreveu sobe os esboços da 10ª Sinfonia de Schubert, a Sonata para piano em Lá maior D959 por Wilhelm Kempff e o ciclo Winterreise por Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau e Jörg Demus.

Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) is one of the Autumn/Winter official composers and this episode is dedicated to him. On the playlist there is Rendering for Orchestra that Luciano Berio wrote using the sketches of the unfinished Shubert’s 10th Symphony, the Piano Sonata D959 by Wilhelm Kempff and the lieder cycle Winterreise by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Jörg Demus.

Making-of Ornitologia 2009-10-04

For this show, I finally found a non-expensive, fast and powerful audio editor: BIAS Peak Express. It has a snap to zero crossings editing mode that allows click and pop-free edits, a feature that the nice Fission lacks. It is faster, more usable and more stable than Audacity. It is cheaper and prettier than Wave Editor (that really competes with Peak Express’ older brothers: LE and Pro). This is the second chance I gave BIAS, after installing a few trials some time ago. I am glad I looked at their editor again.

In today’s Ornitologia the preview of Gulbenkian’s Stockhausen weekend that brings to Lisbon five Portuguese and one worldwide premiere of works from the last cicle of the composer, Klang. On this show, an excerpt from Sirius played by Markus Stockhausen. The Teatro Real in Madrid premiers a new production of Alban Berg’s Lulu. Ornitologia selects the interlude from Act I by Bruno Maderna and the RAI orchestra. Finally, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa celebrates the internatinal day of music with a concert featuring an audience selected program. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was one of the choices and Ornitologia airs the complete Otto Klemperer with Philarmonia Orchestra recording.
