Radu Lupu na Gulbenkian, interview with Peter Rundel (1/2)

A antevisão do recital e dos concertos de Radu Lupu na Gulbenkian são acompanhados neste Ornitologia por música de Ligeti. Por outro lado, Haydn e Berg acompanham a primeira parte da entrevista a Peter Rundel. Na conversa (em inglês), o maestro fala do programa do concerto com a Sinfónica Portuguesa que dirigiu em Lisboa na passada semana. As diferenças artísticas entre uma grande orquestra clássica e um ensamble contemporâneo, bem como o trabalho com os compositores de hoje são outros dos assuntos da conversa.

This show previews this week’s concerts by Radu Lupu at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon: in solo and with the orchestra. It also features the first part of a two part  interview with Peter Rundel (in english), that begins with the presentation of the pieces of  last week’s concert with the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra. The maestro also discusses the differences between a classical orchestra and a contemporary ensemble as well as his work with today’s composers.

Today’s show previews three concerts in Lisbon: Grigory Sokolov at the Gulbenkian Foundation, Sten Sandell Trio at Culturgest, Peter Rundel directing the Portuguese Symphonic Orchestra at Centro Cultural de Belém and the ensemble Divino Sospiro at IST, the engineering school that hosts Rádio Zero.

Schubert (Berio’s Rendering, D959, Winterreise)

Com a chegada do tempo frio o Ornitologia dedica um programa a Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828). Em escuta, Rendering para Orquestra que Luciano Berio escreveu sobe os esboços da 10ª Sinfonia de Schubert, a Sonata para piano em Lá maior D959 por Wilhelm Kempff e o ciclo Winterreise por Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau e Jörg Demus.

Franz Schubert (1797 – 1828) is one of the Autumn/Winter official composers and this episode is dedicated to him. On the playlist there is Rendering for Orchestra that Luciano Berio wrote using the sketches of the unfinished Shubert’s 10th Symphony, the Piano Sonata D959 by Wilhelm Kempff and the lieder cycle Winterreise by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Jörg Demus.

Ornitologia heading for Stockhausen archive

Ornitologia 2009-10-04 episode is heading by snail mail for the archive at Stockhausen-Stiftung für Musik, in Kürten, Germany.

This show is also featured in Pedro Amaral’s site, as the portuguese composer, maestro and scholar was interviewed about the life and work of Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Today’s show is about the life and work of Karlheinz Stockhausen as well as the special cycle that the Gulbenkian Foundation devotes him. About this, Ornitologia interviews the Portuguese maestro and composer Pedro Amaral, also a Stockhausen scholar and collaborator. Making-of Ornitologia 2009-10-04

For this show, I finally found a non-expensive, fast and powerful audio editor: BIAS Peak Express. It has a snap to zero crossings editing mode that allows click and pop-free edits, a feature that the nice Fission lacks. It is faster, more usable and more stable than Audacity. It is cheaper and prettier than Wave Editor (that really competes with Peak Express’ older brothers: LE and Pro). This is the second chance I gave BIAS, after installing a few trials some time ago. I am glad I looked at their editor again.

In today’s Ornitologia the preview of Gulbenkian’s Stockhausen weekend that brings to Lisbon five Portuguese and one worldwide premiere of works from the last cicle of the composer, Klang. On this show, an excerpt from Sirius played by Markus Stockhausen. The Teatro Real in Madrid premiers a new production of Alban Berg’s Lulu. Ornitologia selects the interlude from Act I by Bruno Maderna and the RAI orchestra. Finally, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa celebrates the internatinal day of music with a concert featuring an audience selected program. Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll was one of the choices and Ornitologia airs the complete Otto Klemperer with Philarmonia Orchestra recording.

Zorn’s O’o, Festival Música Viva (Debussy), Nunes’ La Douce

A nova temporada do Ornitologia começa com o álbum O’o de John Zorn e com os temas Miller’s Crake e Little Bittern. Também o concerto de encerramento do festival Música Viva em Lisboa com a Dança Profana de Claude Debussy. Por último, a estreia do teatro musical La Douce de Emmanuel Nunes na Casa da Música do Porto. Em escuta, um excerto de Épures du serpent vert II, baseado na última ópera de Nunes, Das Märchen.

Ornitologia returns with two tracks from John Zorn’s recent album, O’o: Miller’s Crake and Little Bittern. Also, the closing concert from Lisbon’s festival Música Viva with Debussy’s Profane Dance. The show closes with portuguese composer Emmanuel Nunes and the world premier of the musical theater La Douce at Oporto’s Casa da Música. To listen there is an excerpt of Épures du serpent vert II, based on the composer’s latest opera, Das Märchen.

This season starts with a few novelties. The show now features a new (quite similar to the former) intro, but especially some audio separators in the transitions between subjects. I think it could make the show structure more clear to the listener. Also there is now an Ornithological farewell, courtesy of Charlie Bird Parker.
